The Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme visa (sub 187) is a permanent resident visa for skilled workers who wish to work in regional areas of Australia. This type of visa allows employers in regional areas to nominate suitable foreign employees without going through the lengthy process of recruiting and training local people.
This visa requires a two-step process:
- A nomination by an approved Australian employer.
- An application under the nominated stream.
The subclass 187 visa is designed to fill skill shortages in these areas, enabling businesses to hire overseas applicants with the skills needed for their industry. By employing foreign nationals, companies can ensure that they stay competitive and meet their business goals. The visa also helps promote economic growth in regional areas, which often lack employment opportunities due to lower population density.
To be eligible for a subclass 187 visa, applicants must have an appropriate level of English language proficiency, demonstrate job-related qualifications or experience, and possess an occupation on the list of approved occupations for regional Australia.
The Visa Subclass has three streams to choose from, and you can select one to apply for your RSMS visa.
Direct Entry Stream
The Australian Employer Nomination (sub187) visa is a great opportunity for highly skilled foreign workers who want to live and work in regional areas of Australia. In order to be eligible for this visa, applicants must have a minimum of three years of experience in their nominated occupation and be sponsored by an Australian employer.
This visa provides access to permanent residence and the ability to live, work and study anywhere in Australia. Applicants receive all the same entitlements as other permanent residents, including access to Medicare healthcare benefits, social security payments, and full protection under Australian law.
With this visa, employers can fill positions that cannot be filled locally due to skill shortages or access specialist skills from overseas that can help grow their business into new markets or industries.
Temporary Residence Transition Stream
The Temporary Residence Transition stream (TRT) is a pathway to permanent residence for holders of subclass 457 visas. The visa holders must have worked in Australia in their nominated position for two years or more before they can apply for the TRT. This can be a great option for those who wish to stay and work in Australia long-term, as it provides them with an opportunity to gain permanent residency through their employment.
In order to apply via the TRT, the visa holder must first receive sponsorship from their employer, who will nominate them for an employer nomination (subclass 187). Once this is done, the visa holder must submit an application including evidence showing they have been working with the same employer for two years or more. This application also requires documentation regarding English language proficiency and health checks, if applicable.
